QuickDove Explained: The Modular Desk System That Evolves With You
Share
Most desk shelves are static. You buy one, assemble it, and it looks the same until you replace it. QuickDove is different. It is a modular system that lets you change the look of your desk shelf in seconds - no tools, no screws, no commitment.
This article explains how it works, why we built it, and how to get the most out of it.
The Problem We Solved
Our founder spent months looking for a desk shelf that was both well-built and truly customisable. The options were always the same: solid construction but one fixed look, or cheap alternatives that fell apart. Nothing offered the ability to change aesthetics without buying an entirely new product.
The QuickDove system was designed from the ground up to solve this. The core idea: separate the shelf board (the structural, long-lasting part) from the legs (the aesthetic, interchangeable part). Make the connection between them tool-less, instant, and rock-solid. Read more about our story on the About page.
How the Dovetail Slide Works
QuickDove uses a precision-engineered dovetail slide mechanism. Two aluminium mounts are permanently attached to the underside of the solid oak shelf board. The legs have matching dovetail profiles that slide into these mounts.
The connection is:
- Tool-less: Slide on, slide off. No screws, no hex keys, no clips
- Self-locking: The dovetail geometry tightens under load. The heavier the equipment on the shelf, the more secure the connection
- Precise: Tolerances are tight enough that there is zero wobble or play
- Universal: Every QuickDove leg style fits every mount within the same shelf shape
Swapping legs takes under 30 seconds. Lift the shelf, slide one pair off, slide another pair on, set it down. Done.
The 7 Leg Styles
Each leg design is a distinct aesthetic statement. They all fit the same mounts, support the same 100 kg load, and come in the same 24+ colour options:
- Essential: Pure minimalism. Clean, empty form that disappears into your setup
- Pillar: Bold vertical lines. Architectural and commanding
- Organic: Voronoi pattern inspired by natural cell structures. A conversation piece
- Diamond Truss: Industrial lattice pattern. Engineering meets aesthetics
- Horizon: Sleek horizontal lines. Calm and understated
- Hex: Hexagonal geometry. Modern and mathematical
- Zen: Intricate Japanese asanoha pattern. Traditional craft meets modern design
Three Shelf Shapes
The QuickDove system comes in three shelf board shapes, each with its own character. For a detailed comparison, see our buying guide.
- Rectangle: The classic choice. Clean parallel edges that align with most desks. Our most popular shape
- Oval: Softened curves that add organic flow to your workspace
- Trapezoid: Angular geometry that makes a statement
Legs are interchangeable within the same shape. All Rectangle legs fit any Rectangle board. All Oval legs fit any Oval board. The dovetail mount dimensions are consistent across all styles within a shape.
Full Kit vs. Legs Only
Start with a Full Kit
The Full Kit includes the solid oak shelf board with pre-installed dovetail mounts, plus your chosen pair of legs. This is the best starting point - you get a complete, ready-to-use desk shelf with our guaranteed 100 kg weight rating.
Add Legs Only Later
Once you have a Full Kit, you can buy additional legs in different styles or colours. Swap between professional black during the day and a bold colour in the evening. Build a collection. Your oak board lasts for years - the legs evolve with your taste.
The Legs Only option also works for customers who want to bring QuickDove modularity to their own custom timber (minimum 18 mm thickness). The kit includes 2 legs, 2 dovetail mounts, and mounting hardware.
