The Complete Guide to iPhone StandBy Mode Accessories
Share
iPhone StandBy mode turns your phone into a smart display while it charges -- showing the time, widgets, photos, and live activities in landscape orientation. It is one of the best reasons to have a dedicated dock on your desk or bedside table. But to use it well, you need a dock that holds your phone at the right angle, charges reliably via MagSafe, and looks good next to the rest of your setup.
This guide covers what to look for in a StandBy mode dock, the key compatibility details most buyers miss, and our picks for 2026.
What Makes a Good iPhone StandBy Dock?
Not every MagSafe charger stand works well for StandBy mode. Apple designed StandBy to activate when your phone is charging in landscape orientation. That creates specific requirements:
- Landscape orientation at the right angle: The viewing angle should be comfortable from a seated position (desk) or lying down (bedside). Roughly 20-30 degrees from horizontal works best
- Strong MagSafe alignment: The dock must hold the phone securely without sliding or tipping, especially when you tap the screen to interact with widgets
- Stable base: A weighted or wide base prevents the dock from moving when you place or remove the phone. Cheap docks slide around -- good ones stay put
- Cable management: The MagSafe cable should route cleanly through or behind the dock, not dangle off the side of your desk
- Charger version compatibility: Apple's 2024 MagSafe charger is slightly smaller in diameter than earlier versions. Some precision-fit docks only accept the 2024 model -- always check before buying
Our iPhone StandBy Docks
CRT-1: For Retro Design Fans
The CRT-1 iPhone StandBy Dock turns your iPhone into a miniature CRT television. The dock's proportions reference classic TV sets -- rounded edges, a screen bezel frame, and a chunky silhouette that makes StandBy mode feel like a tiny retro display on your desk.
- Precision-fit for the 2024 MagSafe Charger (tight tolerances -- older/larger MagSafe chargers will not fit)
- Weighted steel base for stability -- tapping the screen does not move the dock
- Works with caseless iPhones or standard-thickness cases. Bulkier rugged cases may not fit
- 3D-printed from pro-grade biodegradable PLA in multiple colours
- Pairs perfectly alongside a QuickDove desk shelf -- see our minimalist desk setup ideas for inspiration
RiDGE 1: For Modern, Technical Aesthetics
The RiDGE 1 iPhone StandBy Dock takes a different approach -- sleek ridged lines in carbon fiber PLA. Where the CRT-1 is playful and nostalgic, the RiDGE 1 is minimal and technical. It is the dock for people who want their desk accessories to look like precision instruments.
- Carbon fiber-infused PLA for a metallic, textured finish with enhanced rigidity
- MagSafe compatible with clean cable routing
- Low-profile design works equally well on a desk or bedside table
- Matches the carbon fiber legs available on the QuickDove Essential Rectangle for a cohesive desk set
MagSafe Charger Compatibility: The Detail Most Buyers Miss
Apple has released multiple versions of the MagSafe charger since 2020. The 2024 model is slightly smaller in diameter than earlier versions. This matters because precision-fit docks like the CRT-1 are engineered to exact tolerances.
If a dock specifies "2024 MagSafe Charger only," an older charger physically will not fit. If a dock is designed for the original MagSafe size, the 2024 charger may sit loosely and lose alignment. Always check which charger version a dock supports before buying.
The MagSafe charger is not included with either of our docks -- you supply your own.
Case Compatibility
Precision-fit docks (like the CRT-1) work best without a case or with a standard-thickness protective case. If you use a rugged case, wallet case, or battery case, the extra thickness may prevent your phone from seating properly in the dock.
If you use a thick case and do not want to remove it for charging, look for a dock with a more open design that accommodates extra bulk. Our RiDGE 1 is more forgiving with case thickness than the CRT-1.
Desk vs Bedside: Choosing the Right Placement
Desk Use
For desk use, you want a slightly steeper viewing angle and a compact footprint. Place the dock to one side of your modular desk shelf where you can glance at the time, calendar widgets, or live activities without turning your head. The CRT-1's retro design makes it a conversation piece on any desk -- it doubles as decor.
Bedside Use
For bedside use, a lower angle works better when you are lying down. StandBy mode dims automatically in dark rooms and switches to a red-tinted display to avoid disrupting sleep. Stability matters even more at night -- you do not want a dock that tips when you reach for your phone half-asleep.
Integrating with Your Desk Accessories
Your iPhone dock does not exist in isolation. The best setups integrate it with your existing workspace:
- With a desk shelf: Place the dock on top of or beside your QuickDove desk shelf. The elevated monitor creates space underneath for the dock, keeping your desk surface clean
- With an organizer: A ribbed remote holder next to your dock keeps AirPods cases, watch bands, or small cables from cluttering the area around your charging station
- Cable management: Route the MagSafe cable behind your desk shelf and down the back of the desk. A single cable tray handles both your monitor cables and dock cable

StandBy Mode Tips
- Always On Display: On iPhone 15 Pro and later, StandBy stays visible even when you are not actively looking at it. On other models, it dims after 20 seconds
- Customise your widgets: Swipe between clock styles, photo shuffles, and widget stacks. The clock view turns your phone into a surprisingly good desk clock
- Night mode: In dark rooms, StandBy automatically switches to a red-tinted display to avoid disrupting sleep
- Live Activities: Timers, sports scores, and delivery tracking show up full-screen in StandBy mode
- HomeKit controls: StandBy excels at displaying smart home controls -- lights, thermostat, locks -- for quick access without unlocking your phone
Build Quality and Materials
Both of our docks are 3D-printed from pro-grade PLA -- a plant-based, biodegradable thermoplastic that is dimensionally stable for decades under normal indoor conditions. The CRT-1 adds a weighted steel base for extra stability. The RiDGE 1 uses carbon fiber-infused PLA for enhanced rigidity and a premium metallic finish.
